Azerbaijan’s Pomegranate Exports Reach €48.2 Million in 2025

Discover how Azerbaijan’s pomegranate industry is becoming one of the fastest-growing non-oil exports in the country.

Azerbaijan has seen a significant rise in pomegranate exports, reaching €48.2 million in 2025. This fruit has become a key player in the country’s non-oil export market, with around 23,000 hectares of orchards supplying fresh fruit, juice, concentrate, wine, and seed oil to 26 countries across the globe. Azerbaijan is now competing with major exporters like Iran, Turkey, and Spain in the pomegranate market.

Azerbaijan’s Unique Advantage in Pomegranate Production

Azerbaijan’s producers credit their success to a combination of indigenous varieties, EU-compatible phytosanitary standards, and strategic proximity to European and Gulf markets. With over 200 cultivated varieties, the country’s pomegranates, including the internationally renowned Guloysha, offer distinct flavors and colors that set them apart in international markets.

The industry’s focus on longer shelf life and processed products like juice, concentrate, and oil has extended selling seasons and attracted foreign buyers and supermarket chains. Producers are adapting to strict phytosanitary standards and international packaging requirements to meet market demands.

Challenges and Innovations in Response to Climate Change

Climate change poses challenges for Azerbaijan’s pomegranate industry, with unseasonal weather affecting harvests and productivity. To combat these issues, the sector is prioritizing drip irrigation, digital water management, and enhanced water efficiency to adapt to changing environmental conditions.

Despite the challenges, Azerbaijan’s pomegranate industry continues to thrive, with events like the Goychay Pomegranate Festival showcasing the cultural and economic significance of this fruit. The festival, recognized by UNESCO, highlights Azerbaijan’s rich pomegranate heritage and boosts the international visibility of Azerbaijani exports.
