Canadian Prime Minister Vows to Match US Tariffs After Trade Talks Collapse

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has promised to retaliate «dollar for dollar» against US tariffs following the breakdown of trade negotiations between Ottawa and Washington.

Hefty Tariffs Imposed

New 50% duties affecting approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian goods went into effect on Saturday after Carney denounced the proposed US terms as unfair and uneconomic.

Canada’s Response

In a statement, Carney stated, «Canada will match those tariffs dollar for dollar to safeguard our workers and businesses.» Despite prior progress made towards a favorable deal, Canada’s objectives were not met.

US Position

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer revealed that Canada declined to finalize the trade agreement under the previously agreed terms. The Trump administration had offered tariff reductions in exchange for concessions from Canada.

Disputed Relationship

President Donald Trump, who previously expressed optimism for a deal with Canada, now faces strained relations as Washington accuses Ottawa of discriminatory practices against US products.

Trade Tensions

Ottawa seeks relief from tariffs on steel, aluminium, and autos, which have impacted Canada’s economy and trade dynamic with the US.

Challenging Negotiations

Former US commerce official Ryan Majerus warned that Canada’s decision to impose retaliatory tariffs will complicate efforts to deescalate the situation.
