People carrying portable shrines were soaked with water during the Fukagawa Hachiman Matsuri in eastern Tokyo on Sunday, August 16th.

Colorful Procession and History

The festival, held every three years, featured 54 mikoshi carried along an eight-kilometre route by approximately 25,000 participants. The event dates back to 1642, during the Edo period, and is known for bringing together people from various social backgrounds.

Tragedy and Commemoration

Despite its festive nature, the festival’s history includes a tragic event. In 1807, the Eitai Bridge collapsed under the weight of onlookers, resulting in the loss of nearly 1,500 lives.
