News Corp Reports Strong Revenue Growth Amid Subscriber Decline in Australia

Despite showing a solid increase in global revenue, News Corp faces a challenging landscape in Australia with a notable drop in its digital subscriber base.

News Corp’s Financial Performance Overview

News Corp has announced a significant revenue rise across its global operations, with overall earnings jumping by 7% to reach $9 billion. This growth comes primarily from robust performances in its business-focused Dow Jones unit, book publishing, and digital real estate ventures, according to the financial report unveiled this morning.

Challenges in the News Division

However, the news media segment, which includes recognized titles like The Sun, The Times, and The Australian, has struggled, contributing to a 2% decline in advertising revenue for the fiscal year ending June 30. This dip highlights ongoing challenges within the industry, particularly in maintaining digital subscriptions.

Subscriber Trends in Australia

News Corp Australia’s digital subscriber count has slightly decreased, falling from 1,166,000 to 1,162,000 over the past year. This decline has raised concerns about the sustainability of its digital strategy in a market increasingly dominated by competing platforms.

CEO Robert Thomson’s Remarks

In light of these results, CEO Robert Thomson criticized artificial intelligence models that he asserts «pilfer and profit from our work» without proper compensation. Thomson emphasized the necessity of protecting intellectual property in an era where content is easily repurposed by AI technologies.

“We will pursue those pilferers, and any company engaging with them should recognize they are, in effect, in possession of stolen goods,” Thomson stated.

Commercial Partnerships

News Corp has already entered into commercial agreements with major tech firms like OpenAI and Meta, acknowledging the importance of collaborating with technological leaders while also maintaining its content integrity.

Outlook for the Future

As the company navigates these complexities, it faces the ongoing challenge of fostering digital growth while addressing the evolving landscape of news media and technology.
